Let’s be honest, Halloween 2021 is special for many different reasons; After a whole year and a half of increasing online interactions in PJs and “zoom attire” (if you know, you know), it’s finally time to celebrate the spookiest time of the year, normally. Or is it? However, we understand that with pandemic job cuts and sometimes ‘nonsensical’ tuition increases, a lot of Halloween loving students end up finding their purses filled with cobwebs instead of cash.
So, we have come up with a list of 13 spooky DIY Halloween costumes that will definitely help you stand out but also be trendy amongst your peers and friends.
Without further ado, let’s begin.
1. Squid Games
We all knew this was coming. This Halloween, dress up as one of the many intriguing characters of Squid Games, without worrying to go into severe debt like the unlucky players in the show.
1.1 Players
First off, my heart goes out to Player 199. He definitely deserved better. But anyway, moving on, the players’ teal tracksuits are hands down one of the most easily DIY-able costumes. You can simply repurpose your old green tracksuit or just buy a presumably less expensive non-Squid Game from a nearby thrift store. Then, all you need is some adhesive fabric numbers from ebay, or a white paper with green teal numbers on them. Stick it to your white T-shirt, slip on to some basic white shoes and voila, you are ready to start the game.
1.2 Red-Light, Green-Light Doll
After Annabelle and Chucky, the giant tag doll from the opening episode of Squid Games is here to give you all the chills. Just like her intention and purpose, her costume is super easy to decipher, right from the get-go. All you need is a yellow t-shirt, a corduroy overall dress, or a plain orange flared dress, white knee high socks and/or leggings and a pair of ballet flats- everything being available at thrift stores and sites like ebay and Shein at an insanely low price. And hey, once Halloween is over, you can pair up the trendy corduroy with white or black tops with a pair of boots, ready to be the fall diva that you are.
1.3 Guards
Jumpsuits are in- there’s no doubt. After Money Heist red jumpsuits, the new craze is over the hot pink ones worn by the guards of the Netflix hit, Squid Games. Just because the actual costume, especially the fencing mask, is a rare and expensive find, doesn’t mean you miss out on the fun. Grab a pair of pink raincoat, a black ski mask, and/or white paint or duct tape to don as the hot pink recruits. For added effects, you can use your tripod to make it look like a gun.
1.4 Squid Games Calling Card
Still running in circles with your costume ideas? The EASIEST one is here to help you, fair and square. Dress up as the simple, yet mysterious calling card from the show. Get a cardboard piece, draw the Squid Games shapes on it and you’ll be good to go. Get one of your buddies to dress up as ‘OSAP’ and poke fun at the drama that unfolds when you apply for a student loan from them.
2. Kim Kardashian @ Met Gala 2021
You’d be living under a rock if you say you missed the funny, and hilariously dark attire of Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala. To re-create this iconic all-black Balenciaga look, all you need are a pair of black tube top, or a leather dress, opaque black stockings, a pair of black heels and black metallic tinsel which you can get from any dollar store. To apm up the drama, use a ski mask to cover your face, just like KKW.
3. Baby Yoda from The Mandalorian
If you’re a Mandalorian fanatic, chances are you have definitely gushed over Grogu, The Child, or more commonly known as ‘Baby Yoda’. While waiting for season 3 to drop, why not adorn yourselves with the adorable, yet simple Baby Yoda costume? Trust me, you won’t even need to spend over $15. To make the cute li’l ears, you’ll need to buy a plain headband and a few pieces of green and pink felt cloth from any nearby Dollar Tree. For the head covering, you can either purchase a light green wig OR wear a light green hoodie that is already hanging in your closet and for once, use the hood. In order to make the last bit, the Mandalorian gown, you also have a choice of putting on your brown fall overcoat or invest in a reusable brown bathrobe, and wrap yourself with it.
4. Cruella DeVille from 101 Dalmatians
It’s hard to pinpoint the most important part of her look, because every single bit is iconic – be it the black n’ white wig, red gloves, the dalmatian print fur coat, the black dress or even the cigarette holder. To recreate Cruella’s iconic look, you can – yes, you guessed it right, take a trip to a thrift store (ebay/in person). Glam it up with some over-the-top makeup, something that is not too cruel for your skin though.
By the way, who’s your favourite Cruella?
5. Emily from Emily in Paris
Whether you’re simping hard over the whirlwind romance between Gabriel and Emily in the city of Love or just downright hate-watching the show, you’re, without a doubt, enlisting this show to be one of the most binge worthy shows on Netflix. Which means, being Emily is très in. You can be one of the many versions of Emily in Paris, without a hefty cost and most of the pisces are staples in your everyday wear anyway. Be it the Black n’ white Gingham coat or shirt, a white tank top and the classic red beret OR the gorgeous black Christian Siriano dress she wore to the Paris Opera where she has a heart-to-heart with Pierre Cadault. Everyone owns a little black dress, right? For the finishing touch, bejewel your sleek bun with a shiny headpiece and you gucci.
6. Queen’s gambit
The most significant part of Beth Harmon’s look is her Ginger Bob – which you can easily thrift. Although her clothing keeps a chess motif, you can replicate that with any gingham dress or you could even check-inspired color blocked outfits- which are of course trendy in real life.
7. Maleficent
Remember the little black dress? It’ll come in handy when you want to flaunt your devilishly attractive look and be the diva amongst your friends. For the iconic horns, follow the quick and simple instructions in this video, where a prop maestro shows how to make Maleficent horns under $10.
8. WFH Fit
This is the SILLIEST and the SIMPLEST of them all. Wear your regular PJs and fuzzy slippers, put on a crisp ironed formal shirt/ blouse and grab a cup of coffee. That’s it, you’re ready to be the most relatable and the most complimented character of 2021.
9. Bernie Sanders inauguration fit
Vermont senator’s January Inauguration outfit became a massive hit online when the netizens decided to make viral memes, taking the senator’s photo and placing it in front of hilarious backdrops and contexts. To duplicate this relevant and viral look, just use your everyday grey fall jacket, a pair of cute woolen mittens from any dollar store and of course, a plain surgical mask.
10. Steve from Blue’s Clues
So about that time Steve went off to college… #BluesClues25 pic.twitter.com/O8NOM2eRjy

If you didn’t get all sentimental after Steve’s viral twitter video, you’d be lying. Even after despising most parasocial relationships, this clip has hit most of us in the feels. Just like Steve, if you also wanna pass on some good vibes during this trying time, grab any green and white striped rugby shirt, pair of khaki pants and prop it up with a cap or even a box of crayons.
By the way, didn’t you love the part when he talked about REAL stuff, like the time when he said, “I mean, we started out with clues and now, it’s what? Student loans and jobs and families? And some of it has been kind of hard, you know?” Nothing more real and relatable than that, right?
So, just wanted to let Steve and you know that we understand student loans and a continuous cash outflow is tough but, on the bright side, there’s payd. It’s North America’s first financial management app, specifically designed to help you pay off your student debt. How does payd work, you may ask? Through its 4 advanced features- cash-backs, round-ups, crowdsourcing and investments.
This halloween, save yourselves from the curse of the never ending student debt by just downloading payd from App Store or Google Play , and let it do its magic.
Happy Halloween, y’all.
